Step Forward Into Spring With Our Walking Challenge!

Family Walking

Get the whole family involved!

Now that spring is springing, all you have to do to get started on an adventurous new fitness journey is join our first annual April Walking Challenge!

Here’s how it works:

  • Sign up for the challenge at the office, or give us a call to register
  • Choose the week in which you wish to participate: April 5 – 11, or April 12 – 18
  • Track your daily steps during your competition week using a pedometer, Fit Bit™ or the tracking device of your choice. (If you don’t have one, just let us know, we’re happy to provide you with a pedometer!)
  • Write down the daily total of steps taken on the tracking sheet that we’ll provide.

Once we receive your sheet we’ll enter your name into a drawing to be eligible to win a $50.00 Sport Chek gift card!

The Challenge: 10,000 Steps a Day

You may have heard that taking 10,000 steps a day (approximately 8km or 5 miles) is the ideal outcome we should all be striving for. Don’t let this number worry you, though! The average Canadian only takes 2000-3000 steps a day, so if your numbers are low, you’re not alone!

Walking 10,000 steps a day will burn between 2000 to 3500 extra calories per week for the average adult. If your goal is to lose weight, then try to gradually work up to walking 12,000-15,000 steps a day. Walking is a terrific way to lose weight, and to keep it off as well!

Every Step Counts

Remember, the smallest changes made throughout the day really do add up! Here are some ideas to inspire you:

  • Walk 500 steps every night after dinner—when it gets easy, increase by 100 steps!
  • Park at the very far end of the parking lot whenever you go shopping
  • Walk your dog an extra block (he could probably use it, too!)
  • Walk during your lunch break—get fresh air and more steps!
  • Having a mid-afternoon slump? Skip the coffee and step outside!

Once you start tracking your steps, you’ll find yourself looking for opportunities to take more, and you’ll be able to set new goals quickly and easily. Before you know it, you’ll be taking thousands of more steps each day!

Good luck, and may the best walker win!
